We ask Microsoft
The host is reduced to the tenant name and checked against SharePoint Online and the Microsoft Entra OpenID endpoint. Nothing is sent to the tenant itself.

When you need the tenant ID
The tenant ID is the GUID that identifies a Microsoft 365 organization in Microsoft Entra ID. You need it to register applications, connect with PowerShell and Microsoft Graph, configure cross-tenant access and single sign-on, and to tell apart tenants with similar names.
